Vehicle Decals FAQ

Will the decals damage my paint or leave marks when removed?
No – as long as we use the right type of vinyl (which we do) and the paint underneath is in decent condition. We use automotive-grade vinyl that’s meant to be removable. This isn’t like a cheap sticker that might weld itself on or pull off paint. In fact, vinyl decals often protect the paint beneath from UV fading and minor scratches, so that area might look newer when removed. When you decide to remove the decals (say when selling the vehicle or updating branding), the process is: heat them gently (with a heat gun or even a warm sunny day helps), peel them off – they should come off cleanly or with minimal adhesive left. Any adhesive residue can be cleaned with an adhesive remover or even isopropyl alcohol. The paint will be intact and as it was before the decal. The only thing to note is if the rest of your vehicle’s paint has faded slightly from sun over years, the area under a long-term decal might be less faded (because it was covered). This is usually only noticeable on very bold colors after many years. A quick polish can blend it if it’s slight. But on many vehicles, especially lighter ones, you won’t even notice. Also, if your paint was already failing (peeling clearcoat, etc.), a decal’s adhesive could pull off loose flakes. We usually caution if we see weak paint – sometimes we avoid applying on such areas altogether or warn that removal might reveal pre-existing issues. But sound factory paint or professional repaint will be fine. No permanent damage should occur – we’ve removed 5-yr-old decals from vehicles and after a wash you’d never know they were there. That’s the beauty of using quality vinyl. So you can use decals on leased vehicles or personal vehicles worry-free, knowing you can restore it to stock easily.
Can I apply decals to the windows? Will it affect visibility or defrosters?

Yes, you can absolutely apply decals to windows, and we do it frequently for both advertising and decorative purposes. There are a couple of options for window decals: cut vinyl lettering/graphics or perforated window film. Cut vinyl (solid) is like putting the same kind of decal on glass as on paint. It blocks view wherever the vinyl is, so we usually keep that to small areas or edges so as not to impede driver visibility. For example, a common approach is to place your company’s DOT number or small logo on the rear side windows or a web URL on the back windshield – placed in a way that doesn’t obstruct critical views. White or light-colored vinyl works best on glass (as glass is dark). Solid decals on back or rear side windows are fine because you mostly use side mirrors to drive. However, we avoid putting solid graphics on the front windshield or front driver/passenger windows where it would obstruct your driving view (and it’s often not legal). Now, perforated window film is a special vinyl with tiny holes that allows visibility from inside while displaying a graphic on the outside (one-way vision). This is commonly used on rear windows of trucks (you might see full rear window ads but the driver can still see out). We can print on perf film and apply it to say the rear window of a van – from outside it looks like part of the wrap design, from inside you can see through it (slightly tinted view). It doesn’t affect defrosters or wipers significantly; those still work though constant wiper use may reduce the lifespan a bit on rear windows. Perf film does reduce clarity a little (like a tinted window with dots) but you can still see vehicles/objects fine. At night, with interior lights on, perf is less private, but in daytime it’s great. We use perf for larger window coverage in wraps. For small logos on a window, we’d just use cut vinyl because it’s simpler and sharper. As for defrosters, applying vinyl (especially perf) over them is fine; when removing, just be gentle not to scrape the defroster lines, but heat and peel should pose no problem. The defroster heat itself doesn’t harm the vinyl. Many rear window wraps with perf last years with defrosters used. So, yes – windows are real estate for graphics too, with a bit of planning to ensure safe visibility. We’ll guide you: e.g. “We can put your slogan across the top of your back windshield – that won’t block your view much and is effective.” Or “Your van’s rear windows can be fully wrapped with perf to continue the design, no visibility lost because you can still see out.” If anything is not advisable (like a huge solid decal in a sightline), we’ll steer away from that. We want you safe and street-legal.

What’s the difference between decals and magnets? Should I consider magnets for temporary use?
Magnets are an option for certain scenarios, but they have limitations. Magnetic signs (like those removable door magnets many use) are good if you truly need to frequently remove and reapply branding – for example, if you use your personal car for work during the day and want no sign of business after hours. However, magnets are thicker, can fall off if not properly cared for (dirt underneath or high speed winds), and they can rub against the paint causing uneven fading or scratches if left on long-term. Vinyl decals, on the other hand, adhere firmly and have a more seamless appearance (thinner, looks painted on). They won’t accidentally fly off on the highway or be easily stolen. For long-term daily branding, decals are far superior in durability. Magnets also require a very flat steel surface (they don’t stick to aluminum or fiberglass parts which some car panels are). Decals can go on any smooth surface, curved or plastic or metal. Also magnets are usually limited in size (big ones can start to have weak hold at edges). Decals we can do huge if needed. So, if you only occasionally need signage, magnets are a quick fix. But if you want a professional look and reliability, decals are the way to go. Many people who try magnets end up frustrated that they have to remove them before a car wash or they worry about theft. Decals alleviate those issues – you can wash normally, they’re hard to remove without deliberate effort, and they look more integrated. Plus, as mentioned, removal of decals when you want is still quite easy with some heat. So, for most business uses, I recommend decals over magnets unless there’s a very specific reason you must take branding off daily. In summary, decals = more permanent, sleeker, all-weather; magnets = temporary, less secure, but reusable. We provide both services, but we’ll discuss your particular needs to choose. Often the answer is: decals on the vehicle, maybe a magnet on a rental or something short-term.
