Storefront Signs

The size depends on a few factors: viewing distance (how far away people are when they see it), your storefront width, and local regulations. Generally, you want the sign as large as reasonably allowed to maximize visibility, but not overpowering the facade. A common rule of thumb for letter size is 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance for readability. So if drivers are 100 feet away, letters should be ~10 inches tall at minimum. Many shopping centers allow a sign to be a certain percentage of the storefront width or a maximum height. For example, you might be allowed a sign that’s 70% of your storefront width and letters up to 24″ tall. We will check the code – it often states something like “max sign area = X square feet or Y% of frontage” and “max letter height = Z inches.” We’ll also look at neighboring signs – you generally want parity so your sign isn’t dwarfed by others or vice versa. During design, we’ll present an option that optimizes size for visibility while fitting aesthetic and code requirements. So, the answer is: as big as needed to be clear from the street, and as big as allowed by code. We handle that balance for you. In some cases, a well-designed smaller sign (with high contrast or lighting) can be as effective as a larger one. But we rarely hear “I wish my sign was smaller” – more visibility is usually better! It depends on your branding, budget, and storefront style. Channel letters (individual lit letters) are very popular for retail and franchise businesses because they look professional and each letter stands out. They allow for multi-color logos too (like a logo shape next to letters). If you have a modern look or at night need visibility, channel letters are great. Lightbox cabinets are an older style but still common for small businesses – that’s basically a lit panel with your name on it. They are sometimes less expensive for simple designs and can be good if your logo is complex (printed on the panel). However, they don’t look as high-end as channel letters. Flat panel signs (non-lit) like acrylic or metal letters can look classy especially for offices, boutiques, or if external lighting is already there. They might be required in historic districts (no internal illumination allowed). They rely on either ambient light or spotlights at night. Awning signs can double as shade/weather protection – if you like that look, it’s a two-in-one solution (like a café or bakery might prefer a branded awning). Blade signs are great if a lot of foot traffic walks perpendicular to your store (city sidewalk scenario); often businesses will do channel letters and a small blade sign for side visibility. Ultimately, the best type is one that fits your image and is allowed on your building. We often find channel letters are “best” for most storefronts due to visibility and professional appearance, but they cost a bit more than a simple panel. If the budget is tight, a well-done flat sign with gooseneck lights can also be very effective. During consultation, we’ll recommend what suits your specific case – we won’t push one type if it’s not right for you. And if your landlord mandates a certain style (some plazas say channel letters only, or all tenants must have white letters on raceway, etc.), we’ll follow those rules.

A properly made storefront sign should last many years – often a decade or more. Different components have different lifespans: For illuminated signs, LED modules are typically rated for 50,000 hours or more, which equates to about 11 years if on 12 hours a day. They gradually dim after that but can be replaced individually as needed. The structure (metal, acrylic) of channel letters or sign cabinets can last indefinitely – aluminum won’t rust, and our paints are automotive-grade so they hold color a long time (5-10 years without significant fading, depending on sun exposure). Vinyl graphics on a sign face are usually rated 5-7 years before any shrinking or fading, but again that depends on sun – north-facing signs last longer than south-facing in hot climates. Non-illuminated metal or acrylic letters can easily last 10+ years; sometimes paint might need a refresh after that if it’s a bright color that fades slightly. We design signs so that maintenance is minimal. You may have to clean the sign occasionally (gentle soap/water) to remove dust or bird droppings, etc. If a big storm or hail comes through, our materials are sturdy, but very extreme weather (like a hurricane) could cause physical damage – that’s rare and usually insured. We also engineer wind load tolerances. In short, you can expect years of service: typically clients only replace signs due to rebranding or relocation, not because the sign wore out. We’ve seen our signs still looking great 15 years on, especially with LED tech now (since we no longer worry about neon breaking or bulbs burning out frequently). And remember, we offer warranty support – if any defect in our work arises, we fix it. So longevity is one of the benefits – it’s a durable investment.

This often depends on local regulations or shopping center rules. Some cities have ordinances that signs must be off by a certain hour (like after business closing or by 11pm, etc.), especially in residential areas to reduce light pollution. Many places, though, allow signs to stay on all night – which can be good for advertising to passersby or security lighting. If your sign is near bedrooms or in a historic district, there might be specific rules. From a business perspective, if you can keep it on, it’s free advertising (well, except a small electricity cost) – people driving by at night see you’re there. Also if you have customers early or late, it helps them find you. We can set you up with a timer or light sensor. A common approach is a photocell that turns the sign on at dusk and a timer that turns it off at a set time (say midnight). That way you don’t worry about manual switching. If you’re in a strip mall, often all tenant signs are controlled similarly – the landlord might have a master timer. We’ll coordinate with you on how you want it. If allowed, many businesses keep channel letters on until late night and then off until morning. Some 24-hour businesses obviously keep them on. We’ll make sure to comply with any code about this – occasionally permits will note “Must have automatic shut-off by X time.” In absence of rules, it’s your call. We lean towards keeping them on for visibility (why not let your sign work while you sleep?). Modern LEDs use little power, so cost isn’t huge. But if you prefer darkness after hours, we’ll ensure a reliable off schedule. We’ll also instruct on adjusting timers seasonally if needed (or use an astronomical timer that auto-adjusts to sunset times). So either way, we have you covered.
