Pin-it to Win-it (Part A) : A Beginners Guide to Pinterest

Your company has embraced the social media world. They’ve already ventured into Facebook and maybe even Twitter. Now it’s time to explore your next social media outlet. As all good marketing professionals know, you don’t want to spend all your time on every single social network because they don’t all achieve the same purpose and don’t work for all demographics. You’ve done the research and you know, Pinterest is the next direction your company wants to go with. Now what?

That is the question so many companies find themselves in. They’ve done the research, they’ve seen the data, now they’re just struggling with implementation.  It’s overwhelming – knowing where to begin in terms of optimizing your Pinterest account. We’re going to give you a few tips to make your business pinterest a legitimate business page and how you can “Pin-it to Win-it” for your business.

  1. First thing first – create your pinterest account. Make sure to go to business.pinterest.com to ensure you’re creating a business account. Create a username that is aligned with your overall marketing strategy. Here’s your opportunity to brand your company – whether it’s your company name or a catchphrase used in other marketing opportunities – here’s your chance to remain consistent, enhance your impressions and to make yourselves easily identifiable.
    • After you’ve created your username you’re going to want to make sure that you’ve created a custom logo graphic design that will function as your profile picture. This, along with a custom user name/URL, will help create the consistent brand awareness and recognition that your company is looking for.
    • Make sure to pick a business type that most accurately reflects your business – this can be changes later. For a lot of businesses, like LRT, your business I likely to fall into multiple categories – that being said, pick the one you are most likely to identify with.
    • Fill out your “about” section – you have 200 characters available to use so you better take advantage of this room.
    • Do not forget to put your website address in when creating your pinterest account – if you do make sure to fill it out later.
  2. Make sure to verify your pinterest account. Pinterest will send you a code that you will then need to put on your website. More likely than not, this is done by working closely with your web development team who will be able to put it in the backend for you. Once you get confirmation that this is in you will need to go to pinterest and hit the verify button under settings. You might think its okay to slack off on verifying your account but it’s really not. Having a verifiable Pinterest account shows users that you’re a legitimate business.
  3. Create boards custom to your industry to start utilizing and showing off your products. Ideally – you will have your own products that you can “pin”, allowing you to show off your own products. Do you sell furniture? Create custom boards based on rooms, style etc. – it’s up to your marketing team to find out what the best solution will be. Once you decide to start doing boards by a certain category you can start setting them up. I.E. Living Room, Kitchen, Family Room, Master Bedroom etc etc. Once they’re set up you can start “pinning” your products to these boards.

When you’re pinning remember it’s more than just another social networking arena, it’s for your business. So when you pin, you “Pin-it to Win-it”!
