Do I need to link to my social media pages on my website?

Social media is one of the best ways to brand your company. It’s great exposure, it’s a great way to connect with customers and above all it’s a great opportunity to have a two-way conversation with your customers. As the business world evolves and the world of SEO and social media become more and more integrated – we have seen the emergence of small businesses and corporations take over the social media world but is it enough?

It is amazing to see businesses start to emerge in the social media world – now it’s time to tap into all of the potential that can really help expand the purposes of the social media world. To most of it seems fairly obvious that if you are in the social world you would have it linked on your website, ironically, you would be surprised to hear that tons of clients have a social media presence online but have no link on their website. What?! No link on their website? Yep you heard me correctly.

I’ve even seen major websites with facebook, linkedin and twitter linked to personal accounts. Why their website developer hasn’t corrected this immediately is beyond me. I wish I could say this was a joke and that legitimate businesses don’t have mistakes like this, but they do. Hiring a friend or going the cheapest route might save you a couple bucks on your project, but may cost you thousands down the line. Imagine all the business you’re potentially missing out on from something as simple as links having the wrong url.

Social integration and social media links on your website is an important asset to website development – properly linking to your social networking sites shows the link between the two and in essence helps search engine algorithms to see the relevance of your social media and how it’s tied to your business. If it’s not linked up, or linked to a personal page versus a private page then what you’re doing is breaking the line of connection between the two. As I mentioned earlier, you’re essentially making your social media efforts ineffective when you do that.

As important as it is for you to have a conversation with your clients via social media, it’s important for your social media and your web page to be communicating with each other – not properly linking to your social media or eliminating them from your site entirely prevents the ability for search engines to see the relevance to your business.
