Facebook done wrong. 6 Things Local Brands Are Still Not Getting.

It’s 2014! We live in an era where digital media, social media and the online arena has taken over. Right? Right. Or so we thought. It’s always surprising how many big brands and corporations are still doing social media wrong. Yep that’s right, I said it wrong. We want to help you out though. We want to help dive into some of the reasons why your brand is doing facebook wrong so here it is.

It might be painful knowing that you’re investing time, energy and effort into either a in-house social media expert or outsourcing it to the local expert and not seeing results. The problem is you’re probably outsourcing it because it’s out of your area of expertise and someone is pulling the blanket over your eyes. So here it is, laid out for you, in all your glory.

1. Queen of sucky content.

Content is king! So why is it that your social media person is sucking the life out of any and all content posted on your page. Seriously, did they just repost that horrific meme? Is that content generated from a real person or someone in a foreign country because well, we can’t tell.  It’s important to highlight your brand, but remember the emphasis is to build your brand audience, not to sell it to them. FB is pretty open about their algorithms affecting business pages so if you’re still looking for that organic following, it’s imperative to have content that just kills it on every level.

2. Begging for engagement

Sure, there was a time where it was necessary to ask for a like, comment or share but facebook has evolved and so should your messaging! Like baiting posts and similar related posts not only look pathetic, inauthentic, desperate etc. etc. but it also works against facebook algorithms thereby hurting you and your page in multiple ways. A call-to-action is one thing but that’s very different from begging for engagement.  This for example is a major no-no. No matter how cute you might thing these animals are.

Posting a photo of your company outing at a picnic and asking what others did this weekend isn’t the same as like baiting, it’s asking for real engagement. There is a difference and it’s important to know what the difference is.

3.  Not engaging at all

It’s always a shocker to us when we learn about brands or businesses in our local community that are paying to have their services done. The biggest shocker is always the low engagement that are on these pages. For some reason, we’ve seen a trend in local businesses placing emphasis on number of page likes and number of posts versus the quality (content is king remember) as well as the engagement. The most important thing to know about facebook (and online in general) is that engagement is imperative. Real engagement with real people, will carry your brand far. Spending the time and effort to genuinely engage with your fans and other brands will carry you far. Trust us, it’s worth the investment of your time and money. As important as content is, engagement may be just as important if not more. Without engagement your content will not be carried far.

4. Refusing to come up with an advertising budget<a

No one wants to spend extra money on social media, especially if they’re paying someone to create and post killer content. The reality is that facebook has made it very clear that organic posts just do not have the same reach as paid ones. (funny how that works right? :p) Basically if you want to reach more than 2% of your audience you are forced into a corner of needing to create some sort of budget to help grow your business. Here is a great article on why every business should spend at least $1 a day on facebook ads from our friends over at Moz
