10 Signs it’s time for a new business card, at the very least – a redesign.

LRT deals with customers who are in need of our help on the regular. One of the most frequently debated subjects we get from our clients is whether or not it’s time for new business cards, or at the very least a redesign. We typically want to scream YES YES YES of course you need a new business card, but some might say we’re a little bias. It’s not like we’re a printing or graphic design company or anything (wink wink, nudge nudge). Needless to say, we thought it would be a good opportunity to put something together, sort of a checklist, that you should keep when debating whether or not you should get new business cards. That way – when you show up – you already KNOW you want business cards. Trust us when we say, this will make everyone happier. Seriously. Please. Just use this checklist. Or pay the price (okay, JK).

Business cards are one of the most essential parts of any business professional, it is the first thing you hand someone and the first opportunity for marketing and branding purposes.

Before utilizing this checklist it’s important to have your current business card out so that you as you go down the check list you can make mental (or real) notes. That being said, if you don’t have a business card to bust out, that’s probably the first sign that you need one.

Now that you’re looking at your business card think about the following things:

  1. Can you immediately identify your business’s purpose?
    • I.E. is it easy to figure out what services you provide immediately or does it take a minute. If it takes more than .03 seconds to figure out what your service is, it’s time for a new card.
  2. Can you immediately identify your business’s branding or logo?
    • If you can’t immediately identify the branding or logo of your business on your business card, you’re in serious trouble. A company’s logo is one of the easiest ways to identify and brand a business. If your logo isn’t easily identifiable then you’re missing out on an important opportunity. If you’re wondering if the design of a business card really matters, the answer is yes, it’s always yes. It’s important to re-enforce the branding of your company as frequently (and as appropriately) as possible, business cards are often your first opportunity to do so, so don’t miss out!
  3. Do you have the right information on your business card?
    • Too often we hear and see about people having a business card that has outdated information, sometimes even the wrong contact person. It should be fairly obvious, but in case it’s not we’re going to lay it out for you. A business card is a persons direct way of contacting you. Not your boss, not your assistant, not the girl who did your job last year, it’s a direct source to you. It’s important when networking and building relationships with those in the business community to make sure they have a direct line of contact to the person they have built a relationship with.
  4. Does your business card stand out or is it boring?
    • Whether you’re in the entertainment business or the insurance business it’s important to have a business card that stands out. This is an opportunity to creatively grab the attention of your potential customers and clients so utilize it to the best of your ability. There’s nothing wrong with a boring business card, except everything about it. Don’t settle for ordinary when your card can be extraordinary. Want to see some really awesome business cards? 5. Does your card connect with your target audience?
    • It’s important to remember that your business card is a form of marketing, branding and advertising not just yourself but your business. Therefore it’s important that your business card, just like any other marketing strategy, connects with your audience. So the question is, does yours?
